Meme and a ficlet

Okay so I wrote a ficlet on comment_fic today. It's tiny, but I haven't written anything in so long I figured I'd link it here anyway.

And then there's this meme stolen from the flist:
Name your 10 absolutely favorite couples (het/slash/canon/fanon) and ask people to see what trends they notice about your couples. Try to pick different fandoms:

It seemed entertaining, so I'm playing. *g*

Supernatural - Sam/Dean
RPS - J3 (extra Misha is optional, but appreciated)
Farscape - John/Chiana
Dark Angel - Alec/Joshua (I blame this utterly AWESOME fic I read. Of course I'll never be able to find the link again. Trust me, this pairing works in a non-creepy way.)
Battlestar Galactica - Kara/Lee
Greek mythology - Orpheus/Eurydice
Shakespeare (Much Ado...) - Kate/Benedict
Firefly - Zoe/Wash
Leverage - Eliot/Nate
X-Men (comics)- Remy/Logan

Edited to add: Warning, there may be spoilers for these shows in the comments.

And here's my ficlet which can be Fox verse or just preseries for the show. No knowledge of Fox verse is needed to read this:

Test, 1, 2, 3...
This was a test. Of course it was. Everything was always a test. Either you pass or you fail... and 494 was tired of failing.

The mission was simple, retrieve the red backpack and return it to his handler. 494 would have been insulted by the artlessness of the task if it wasn't for one tiny detail. 494 wasn't in the compound. 494 was in Colorado. He knew that the differences were minimal. Colorado was also a cold climate with mountains. If he closed his eyes, it almost sounded the same. Almost. There was an absence of gun fire, barking orders, and there were more animals. Even in the deepest parts of the woods in the Wyoming compound, he could always hear echos of what was happening in the training yards. Here, he could hear a chopper in the distance, a few men talking on radios, and russling in tree tops. That would be the snipers in case 494 decides to go rogue on his first official mission. 494 has no plans for disobedience. He learned what happened when you don't follow orders, and that wasn't even HIS mistake. It was Ben. Always Ben. His own personal boogie man.

Finding the backpack was easy. Manticore never intended it to be difficult. The difficult part was coming back home. Choosing to return. That was the test.

494 was tired of failing. He was no Ben. He wouldn't run.

Kara/Lee is interesting for me because I REALLY liked them in the beginning of the show... then Sam came along and I HATED him... then I started to really like him. Eventually Kara and Lee self destructed so much that I really loved Kara/Sam. Kara/Lee was my primary pairing for BSG for most of the show though, so I went with them. I mostly loved them because they fulfilled an unspoken need in each other. They were playful and fun and yet were like forbidden fruit because of Zak. They had great tension. I also LOVED the fact that when Kara punched Lee, Lee punched back.

Orpheus/Eurydice is just one of those classic heartbreaking stories which doesn't have a happy ending. I like that it doesn't have a happy ending. I like that they love each other more than anything else in the world and they STILL couldn't be together. I really like more modern retellings of the myth which focus more on Eurydice, instead of making her so passive. Sarah Rhul (I think I spelled her name wrong. It sounds like "Rule" but there's an H in there somewhere) wrote a play called "Eurydice" which I really dig. I also love Reilka's poems. I totally spelled his name wrong too...

Chiana was always my POV character, so naturally I paired her with the main guy. Plus everyone saw their relationship as brother/sister but it was so obvious to me that Chiana was really in love with this guy. I wanted her to get what she wanted.

If I ever find that Joshua/Alec story I'll send you the link. What's nice about those two is they genuinely care about each other. Plus Joshua is sort of guiless. If he wants to fuck he just says so. Alec knows where he stands. Despite the fact that Max always treated Joshua like a little kid, he's older than all of them and it's nice to see that reflected in fic on occation.

As for Max/Alec, I always HATED how Max was portrayed on the show. She had so much potential and instead came across as a selfish whiner. Plus she always made Alec such a scapegoat (sure he sometimes deserved it, but not always). I can't see them in an equal relationship. She'd always be alpha and not in a fun sexy way. She'd try to remold Alec into something he's not.

As for Zoe/Wash, my love for them doesn't come from the tragedy of Wash's death. My love comes out of their genuine affection for each other and the fact that Zoe could physically kick Wash's ass. I loved that the WOMAN was the physically more capable of the two, and yet she wasn't treated as masculine. She just happened to kick ass. Their relationship was fantastic. It was something I don't see often on tv and I wish I saw more often. They weren't the traditional gender roles. They had their own skills and neither one was more useful than the other. They matched each other well.

Re Max: ya, I'm with you about the whining and the scapegoating. I have the DVDs but I find it harder and harder to watch her. It's like Romeo and Juliet. When I was a teen, I thought they were romantic. The older I get the more I want to smack Romeo upside the head for being such a flake.

Re Zoe/Wash: Sigh. They are great characters aren't they. It's also very nice to see a couple that love each other, are equals, and are not trying to remold the other.
